Lung volumes and ventilatory flows: report of Working Party.

چکیده
In § 3.5.1.6. the authors emphasize the importance of adequate temperature measurement in the spirometer. However, temperature stability is also important. When a patient breathes in a spirometer, heat is dissipated due to various sources, the heat of reaction in the CO2-absorber being the most important. The resulting increase in temperature is counteracted by the heat capacity of the instrument and by natural heat transfer to the ambient air, and is, therefore, dependent on the construction of the instrument and the materials used. Consequently, the spirometer volume increases, and this may lead to substantial errors in FRC-determinations, since it would lead to undetected imperfect oxygen supply, and incorrect helium meter readings. This effect is very prominent when dry rolling seal spirometers are used for FRC-measurements. Does the Working Party have a recommendation regarding temperature stability?

Standardised lung function testing.
In 1983 a supplement entitled "Standardised Lung Function Testing" was published by one of our parent journals, the Bulletin Europeen de Physiopathologie Respiratoire [1]. This seminal and widely quoted work reported the recommendations of a Working Party established originally under the auspices of the European Community for Coal and Steel and reflecting the long-standing interest of that body...
متن کاملRespiratory muscle force and ventilatory function in adolescents.
In 94 girls and 90 boys, aged 12.5-20.3 yr, the relationship of respiratory pressures or forces with lung volumes and ventilatory flows was studied. There was great variability in respiratory muscle performance, which helps to explain differences in lung volumes between individuals. Respiratory muscle force increases almost proportionally with thoracic dimensions, so that inspiratory and expira...
متن کاملVentilatory function in the Eisenmenger syndrome.
Ventilatory function and carbon monoxide transfer factor were studied in nine adult patients with post-tricuspid intracardiac defects and the Eisenmenger syndrome. A consistent mild defect of ventilatory function was found, with raised residual volume and closing capacity and reduction of other lung volumes and maximal expiratory flows. Maximal expiratory flow was particularly reduced at low lu...
متن کاملParadoxical responses to positive end-expiratory pressure in patients with airway obstruction during controlled ventilation.
OBJECTIVE To reevaluate the clinical impact of external positive end-expiratory pressure (external-PEEP) application in patients with severe airway obstruction during controlled mechanical ventilation. The controversial occurrence of a paradoxic lung deflation promoted by PEEP was scrutinized. DESIGN External-PEEP was applied stepwise (2 cm H(2)O, 5-min steps) from zero-PEEP to 150% of intrin...
متن کاملVentilatory limitations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by dysfunction of the small and large airways, as well as by destruction of the lung parenchyma and vasculature, in highly variable combinations. Breathlessness and exercise intolerance are the most common symptoms in COPD and progress relentlessly as the disease advances. Exercise intolerance is multifactori...
